November PTI Blog Hop: Cover Inspiration

Happy November!  I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  I'm back with this month's projects for the PTI blog hop.  This month's challenge was to take inspiration from a book or catalog cover.  I've found that as I've gained experience in my crafting hobby that I regularly look at things with a critical eye, especially to see if I can translate an idea into my crafting projects.  Clothes, food, furniture and print material in particular are often the springboards for some excellent color combos or card layouts.

This time of year seems to bring a lot of junk to my mail box, however even if I don't plan to buy anything from a catalog or promotion mailer, sometimes I save it because I'm drawn to the graphics.  This was the case for my two inspiration pieces for my blog hop projects.

My first project was inspired by this ad from Bath and Body Works:
I liked the bright colors, the warmth of the cozy slippers and the pretty bow.  All of these elements I tried to incorporate into this card:
The striped patterned paper reflects the candy cane border of  the ad; the stockings represent the slippers; the sentiment band takes the place of the green satin ribbon.

I decided to make a second project because I was also inspired by this catalog from Franklin Covey:

I was drawn to the graphic gray chevrons paired with the bold red and white snow background and the decorative frame for the focal image and came up with this:

Thanks for stopping by!  I look forward to seeing what you made for the hop!

October PTI Blog Hop: Non-Traditional Holiday Color Schemes

Another month gone by already?  Boy this year is flying!  I'm back to share a couple of cards I made for this month's PTI blog hop.  My friend Kristie came up to visit me last weekend for some crafty shopping and card making!  I was sorry to see the weekend come to an end, we were having such a good time!  Anyway, I have been debating about purchasing PTI's Vintage Ornaments stamp sets and dies for awhile now.  Kristie has them and brought them up with her so I could try them out and decide if they needed to move from my "maybe list" to my "buy list."  Verdict's in and the stamps and dies are now on my buy list!

I apologize for the poor lighting in the photos.  Photographing at night, even with an Ott light is not ideal.  I made one card using the Raspberry Fizz, Hibiscus Burst, Aqua Mist and Hawaiian Shores combo.  The pink and blue striped paper from Candy Cane Prints worked perfectly for this card.  I think this one is my favorite of the two:

My second card uses the Aqua Mist, Hawaiian Shores, New Leaf and Simply Chartreuse color combo.  I also got to try out my new Diagonal Stripes impression plate:

Thanks so much for stopping by!  I look forward to seeing your creation too!

PTI September Blog Hop: Felt & Fabric

Happy Fall!  I'm back with a couple of projects I made for this month's PTI blog hop.  My first one is a re-purposed tea canister (if you are a tea drinker and enjoy apple cider, try Republic of Tea's Hot Apple Cider herbal tea--it tastes just like cider without the sweetness and it smells heavenly!)  that I dressed up with some patterned paper, a strip of brown fabric as a bow, a handcrafted tag and some die cut foliage.
The tag features the Autumn Acorns stamp set and dies and the Borders & Corners Circle set.  The die cut orange sprigs that are tucked under the fabric are from the Winterberry die set.  This little canister would be perfect for packaging up some ginger spice cookies and sharing with a friend.

My second project is a Halloween treat bag that I crafted using the larger boxy banner die.  I cut two of the banner shapes out of orange felt.  Then I used the jack-o-lantern face dies from the Shape Up pumpkin die set to cut out the face pieces from black felt.  I stitched the face onto the front of one of the banner pieces, then blanket stitched the two banners together creating a pocket.  Some chartreuse ribbon stitched in for a handle, and you have a little handmade treat sack for a special pumpkin in
your life!

Thanks so much for stopping by!  I look forward to seeing what you've created for the hop!

PTI August Blog Hop: Fall-Inspired Patterns & Textures

Now that my camera battery has recharged, I was finally able to snap a photo of my card I made for this month's PTI blog hop, which is all about fall-inspired patterns and textures.  I recently purchased a set of Lifestyle crafts embossing folders, which included a houndstooth pattern as well as an argyle pattern.  I chose to use those as the starting point for my card, along with a sketch I found in an old Papercrafts magazine.

I inked up the houndstooth folder with kraft ink and then ran a panel of Fine Linen cardstock through my Big Shot Express, creating sort of a letterpress look.  Then I used the argyle folder and ran my card front through the machine as well.  I trimmed the bottom of the houndstooth panel, following the card sketch pattern.  A couple of Prima leaves and a Making Memories epoxy embellishment were clustered on top of the houndstooth panel and then I finished off the card adding the strip with the sentiment and a brown rhinestone.

Thanks for stopping by!  From the thumb nails I've seen thus far for the hop, there is plenty of inspiration to be found!  Can't wait to get closer looks.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!  I'm off work for the next week and I plan to get busy crafting!

PTI MIM: Ink Pads as Watercolors

I actually was able to make a card for this week's Make It Monday challenge!  Dawn was right when she said watercoloring was therapeutic.  It was so relaxing to just play around with the paint brush last night when I got home from work.  Unfortunately I don't seem to have an ink pad that works well with watercoloring--guess I'll need to fix that during one of my next shopping trips!  I was happy to  give a stamp set that hasn't seen much inking and some patterned papers that haven't had much use some attention for this challenge:

As you can see, the ink from the stamped image ran a bit, but I still think this turned out okay.  I added some black enamel accents to the center of the flowers.  The jar of water I had sitting on my desk from a previous project must have been used with some pearlized water paints or something, because I can see a fine dusting of gold shimmer on the morning glories.

Thanks for stopping by!

July 2012 PTI Blog Hop: Summer Palette

Hi!  Long time, no post.  I'm just squeaking in my project for this month's PTI blog hop.  I made this card last night and then wasn't going to post it because apparently I misread the color combination and thought there was Hibiscus Burst in the palette and completely ignored the Melon Berry!  I remember thinking while I was making the card that is seemed strange to have two vivid pinks--Hibiscus and Berry Sorbet.  Yeah, that is strange, and yeah, I was wrong about the color palette!  Oh well.  I didn't have time to make another card, so forgive me for not quite making the mark on this one!

Thanks for stopping by!  I've seen some gorgeous projects in the hop today!

Happy Monday!

I'm back with a card I made for the June PTI blog hop.  This month's inspiration photo provides a beautiful summer color palette in aqua blue, fresh green and lemon yellow along with fun ruffles and pleats:

Here is my card:

I was really wishing I had the new Natural Beauties flower set for this card, but I will have to wait to purchase that set in July during Stamp-A-Faire!  The Stitches & Swirls set was a suitable substitute, but I can't get that Natural Beauties set out of my head!

Birthdays are Better in Flip Flops

Hi, I'm back with a card I made for a birthday card order from my co-worker.  She requested something summery and blue for her sister-in-law, whose birthday is in July.  PTI's Flipping Out set immediately came to my mind.

I die cut the hearts from fun foam as an extra touch of dimension for the flip flop straps.  The card recipient is turning 30 this year, and I thought the "30" brad from the Dear Lizzy Neapolitan collection was an appropriate addition to the tag.

Hope you're enjoying a bit of summer where you are!

Thanks for stopping by!

Make It Monday: Inspiration Into Unique Sketches

Hi, I'm back again with a quick post to share the two cards I made for this week's Make It Monday.  I chose two of the sketches, one based on the scrap page layout and the other on the everyday object.  A piece of 8 1/2" x 11"raspberry striped paper (something I bought eons ago for 18 cents from a store that is no longer in business!) was the color trigger for my two projects.  I made two cards from the striped paper and then found other scraps in my folder that complemented the card base.

Here is the first card:

The felt roses were some embellishments I made when I was playing around a few weeks ago. I just added the pink rhinestones to perk them up a bit.

Here is the second card:

We are hosting a baby shower for a gal at work this week, so this card was timely.  Plus, it gave me a chance to break out my new Sweet Baby set and dies for the first time!

Thanks for stopping by!

New Ink Pad Storage

A few weeks ago at Target I was browsing in the seasonal aisle.  Among the picnic ware, I found a cool spinning condiment caddy and immediately started to think it might be good for storing some of my crafting supplies.  I got it home and found it was perfect for my new formula PTI inks!

Sorry for the poor photo.  I'm charging the battery for my regular camera right now.  At least you get a good idea of what it looks like!

You can see there is a second one in the background.  I liked the first one so much I went and bought a second one for my Memento dew drop ink pads!  I love it when I find the perfect storage solution!

Sending Smiles

It's Friday Eve and I'm back with a card I made earlier this week for this week's Make It Monday.  How could I not participate in this week's challenge when I have tons of paper scraps in various storage vessels in my craft room?!  I only wish I could consume them as quickly as I acquire them!

I was inspired by the layout of the card Dawn made, but my color palette is oriented to late summer/early fall and I flipped the focal images and sentiment on my card.  I also added some faux stitching between the patterned paper seams.  My faux stitching clearly isn't perfect, but I assure you it is FAR better than my real attempts with a sewing machine.  Trust me on this.

Thanks for stopping by!  Enjoy the rest of your week!

MIM: Inspired Color Challenge

I'm back with a card I completed for this week's Make It Monday challenge.  I had originally started to work on a different project using one of the other color combinations, but I just couldn't get it to come together the way I wanted.  I finally decided to try a different project inspired by this photo and color combination:

Here is my card:

I loved the floral pattern of the head board in the inspiration photo and was also drawn to the chevron pillow (I'm a bit late to the chevron party--I just got the chevron background set in my last PTI order!), so those were the elements I wanted to incorporate in my project.

Thanks for stopping by!  Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

60 Birthday Wishes

Happy Weekend!  I'm back to share a card I made yesterday for a 60th birthday celebration I'm going to tonight.  After I finished it, I realized that it would work for this week's MIM challenge--to glitter a die cut!

I also made a coordinating tag for the special bottle of Washington wine I'm bringing the birthday boy.  Do you know how stressful it is to select a bottle of wine for a wine connoisseur when you aren't one yourself?! I got some great recommendations from my co-worker, whose dad has worked in the wine industry for years.  Fortunately I was able to find one of the brands he recommended at my local wine shop.

That's it for me.  I've got a busy weekend of card making ahead of me--two babies, an engagement, and a few birthdays!

Crafting with Kraft

I'm back to share a couple of cards I made yesterday. I didn't specifically plan to use kraft on both of these, it just turned out that way.

First up is a thank you card I needed for my boss. She just returned from a Spring Break vacation to Disney World with her kids and brought each of us on her team back a little souvenir can of flavored coffee. This gave me the perfect opportunity to break out my Heart 2 Heart #1 set and die, which I hadn't used yet. Feel free to click on the photo for a closer look.

I also tried a couple of other fun products on this card. First the Tag Sale #6 die. I love that the decorative tag hole reinforcer is a separate piece and you can cut it with a different color or pattern paper. I used a coffee cup stain background stamp (from Inkadinkado) on the kraft cardstock, which I stamped with PTI kraft ink (see the faint rings and splotches?). I then used two different sprays to give the kraft panel some more "oomph." I sprayed some Goosebumps texture spray a few times. Have you heard of it? It's by Tsukineko and it's clear and gives a raised water drop-like effect when dry. I've heard they've come out with a few more kinds of this spray, one of which is a shimmer. Cool! I also tried out my Mister Huey's color mist in Clay. From the name you would think it would be almost a terracotta color, but no, it's more of a dark grayish brown. I figured I'd give it a shot. It turned out really cool and gave the paper the effect of drips of coffee on it!

On to my second card. One of the new items PTI is releasing this month is a set of notched flower dies. I've been intrigued with them, but wasn't sure if I really *needed* them, besides, I've got to maximize my crafting $$ and make sure I'm buying things I'm really going to love and use! So, I decided to see if I could make one of these notched flowers on my own.

I punched a 1.75 inch circle from Raspberry Fizz cardstock and then just went around the circle and cut little notches at somewhat spaced intervals. The end result was so-so. Definitely not uniform notches in even intervals, but it was still sort of charming. I decided to see what else I could come up with to make it into a whimsical flower. I found a scrap of Pure Poppy bitty dot paper and punched a 1.25 inch circle out of it. I roughed up the edges a bit with my finger nail and did the same to the notched flower. I stitched the two layers together with some Martha Stewart red baker's twine and fastened with a Dark Chocolate button. The leaves are cut from Simply Chartreuse cardstock using the larger leaf die from Sending You and then I roughed them up with my fingernail as well. Flower done. Not too bad. The rest of the card just sort of fell together from there. I tucked a couple of pearl head pins behind the flower for some additional interest.

So my final consensus on the notched dies? I still may get them because I don't know if I will have the same amount of patience each time when I go to cut them out myself and the Type A in me gets annoyed when things aren't balanced and evenly cut! LOL! Still, it's nice to know I could execute a reasonable substitute on my own.

All right, I've got a busy day ahead of me between laundry, grocery shopping and baking (Sea Salt Caramel brownies anyone?). Plus, I have to finalize my PTI shopping list for tonight!

Later!

MIM: Ice Cream Scoop = Flower?

Happy Weekend! Earlier this week I found the time to make a card for this week's PTI Make It Monday challenge, which was to find a non-flower die and turn it into a flower. I went through all of my PTI dies and came up with a few possibilities, but decided to go with the least predictable of the bunch: the ice cream die that coordinates with the Sweet As Can Be Set.

The cone portion of the die didn't fit into my vision, but the ice cream scoop did, so I cut six "scoops" and adhered them to a circle base, then added a couple of punched scalloped circle layers and an aqua flower button from my stash, and there was my handmade flower embellishment!

Thanks for stopping by! Hope you're having a lovely weekend!

Take Two

It's Hump Day and I'm back to share a card I reworked last weekend. A lot of us crafters have made a thing or two that just didn't turn out like we planned. The first iteration of this card was one of those. I'd made the card for a challenge where I left the front of the white card base exposed then impressed a die into the front, creating a subtle frame and then stamping my sentiment inside it. The flower embellishment was added to the bottom corner of the frame. Blah. Too pale, too boring. So I didn't use it for the challenge, and the card sat and sat. I came across it in a box while I was sorting this weekend and decided that rather than toss it I would rework it. So here is Take Two:

Much better. More colorful, more fun patterned paper. I'm happy with Take Two.

Thanks for stopping by! Enjoy the downward slope to the weekend!

March PTI Blog Hop

Happy Sunday! Oh man, is there a full moon going on or something? I have had some annoying computer issues this weekend between updating my virus software, saving my photos, getting my photo editing program to work and then posting this to the wrong blog. I'm just now finally able to get this post done, and I actually finished these cards last week. Maybe I should take this as a lesson to take the photos and schedule the post as soon as the cards are done!

I made two cards for the March PTI blog hop. Visit Nichole's blog here to see the details of the challenge and the inspiration photo.

Here is the first card I made:

I loved the yellow stripes and aqua ribbon in the inspiration photo and wanted to incorporate those elements into my card. The striped paper is from Michaels and I scored it for $.19 on sale!

Here is the second card I made, which gave me the opportunity to use the new Medallions background set along with Rosie Posie (yes, I'm a bit of a latecomer to the Rosie Posie party!)

Thanks for stopping by! Have a lovely week!

Make It Monday: Graduated Backgrounds

Hi! I was really in the mood to craft when I got home from work tonight so I decided to play along with this week's Make It Monday. I chose to make my graduated background with Copic markers. I ended up making two cards, but I preferred the second one I did over the first:

The blue tones I chose to work with reminded me of water, and I remembered the cute fish image in the Tremendous Treats Valentine set, so I decided to make an underwater scene. I left the heart air bubbles uninked when I stamped the fish, stamped it three times on scrap paper, colored them in with yellow Copics, then trimmed them out by hand. I found the perfect companion sentiment in my rubber stamp drawer and the itty bitty rhinestones as air bubbles finished the card off perfectly.

Here is the first card I made:

The colors seem a bit off in the photo, the background isn't that dark in real life. Again, I went with a water theme on this one. Seems especially appropriate given all the rain we've been getting here over the last few weeks. I'm ready for some spring and sunshine!

You're Tweet

Hi! I'm popping in with a quick post to share a card I made this weekend. Last week one of my co-workers surprised me with a pack of 12 x 12 patterned paper. It's a darling Paris-themed paper pack with a couple of sheets that have a cute girl on them, and I've actually come close to buying it for myself several times when I've gone to Michaels but have exercised great restraint and held off! One of the papers in the pack is a collage of store fronts and window box images, and it inspired me to make this as a thank you to my friend:

I initiated the popular Poppy Stamps window and window box dies that I've had in my stash for quite awhile. They cut beautifully and I can see myself using them for all sorts of occasions. Little Bitty Bird makes a special appearance at the top of the window and chirps "You're tweet!" to my friend.

Thanks for stopping by and have a good week!

Card details:
Note card, Patterned Papers and Spring Border die from Memory Box; Grand Madison window, Grand flower box and Ivy Tendril dies from Poppy Stamps; Little Bitty Bird stamp set from PTI; sentiment from A Muse Artstamps.

PTI Make It Monday: Glitter Buttons

I'm back with a project for this week's Make It Monday, to use glittered buttons. I found this big yellow flower button in my stash and decided to sparkle it up with some Buttercup stickles. The rest of the card just fell into place after I picked out some coordinating card stock and paper in my scrap bin.

It is sunny right now in Seattle, though the forecast today does include some snow! It's definitely cold out, but I'm not seeing any clouds that look like they are going to bring us snow. I hope not, I'm ready for spring!

Thanks for stopping by! Have a good week!

February PTI Blog Hop: Interactive Cards

Hi and Happy Weekend! I'm back with a project for Papertrey Ink's February blog hop, to make an interactive card. I knew my February release order wouldn't arrive in time for me to play with the new zipper or slider dies for the hop, so I created this project last weekend.

I found a depleted Starbucks gift card lying on my desk and it got me thinking about fun ways to present a gift card to someone. I came up with this:

And here is the interactive part where the recipient can pull out the gift card:

Thanks for stopping by! I look forward to seeing all the other projects in the hop!

Card details:
From PTI: New Leaf card stock, Dark Chocolate card stock and ink, Dotty Biscotti patterned paper, Warm Happiness Too stamp set and die, Simple Sentiments stamp set, Mini Tab stamp set and die; Memento inks in Bamboo Leaves and Cottage Ivy; Martha Stewart baker's twine in brown and green; mini kraft sacks from?; Tim Holtz tiny attacher and staple; We R Memory Keepers corner chomper; Fiskars notch punch.

Heart to Heart

I got a late start to crafting today. It's just after 10 p.m. as I post this. I have a friend coming over tomorrow and I've spent all day getting my house ready for my guest. I'm tired, but I just had to play along with today's PTI anniversary challenge, which is to create a project using hearts.

Do you remember Nichole's red, white and kraft card here? It is one of my all time favorites, I just love everything about it. I was thinking about the new Heart 2 Heart coffee cup set Melissa Bickford is releasing this month, and it reminded me of Nichole's card. I decided to do a variation on it, swapping out the white for dark chocolate coffee cups and adding in some pops of Raspberry Fizz for something different.

Thanks so much for stopping by! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Sending Birthday Wishes

Happy Friday!!!! I'm back with a card I made using this sketch provided by PTI in honor of their 5th Anniversary celebration:

Here is the card I made inspired by the sketch. It doesn't follow the design exactly, but that's the fun part of sketch challenges. They offer a good starting point and then you can change things up as you like.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Shades of Blue

Friday Eve! One day closer to the weekend! I'm back with my project for today's Papertrey Ink challenge, to pick an image from Pinterest and make something inspired by it. All of the designers' projects were lovely, but I decided to select my own inspiration photo from Pinterest. I chose this one:

Those who know me know blue is my favorite color (I guess you could figure that out from my blog template, too!). Since I've been making so many pink projects lately, I decided it was time for a change. Here is my card inspired by the blue tile image above:

This is a super simple graphic card. I just used a 7/8" square punch to cut out four squares each from Spring Rain, Blueberry Sky and Hawaiian Shores card stock and layered them on a Soft Stone card base. I left off the fourth Hawaiian Shores square and stamped "Miss You" from the Communique Curves Sentiments set. Easy Peasy.

More Fun with Freebies

Two posts in one day! I'll keep this one short. I'm back with my second card featuring one of the PTI freebie images. This one features Dawn's tag:

The tag aside, I was definitely tapping my "Dawn muse" for this card. Bold colors, lots of layers, damask background. Super fun card, I think it's one of my all time favorites!

Thanks for stopping by! I can't wait to see what's in store tomorrow for the PTI anniversary festivities!

Fun with Freebies

Happy Monday! I'm back with another card featuring a fun image from the PTI freebie sheet here. I remember how much fun I had last year playing with the free images provided by the PTI designers, and the designs offered this year are proving to be equally enjoyable!

I was anxious to get home from work today and play. All day I had been thinking about which images I was going to use, and even took a few minutes to sketch out some ideas. I decided I wanted to use the images that Melissa and Dawn created.

Here is my card with Melissa's love stamps image:

I created my own background using images from the Postmarks set stamped with Smokey Shadow ink. The Hawaiian Shores mat was punched with a Fiskars postage edge border punch. I layered a couple of buttons together and tied them around the Raspberry Fizz knot at the top to finish off the card.

I'll be back shortly with my card using Dawn's image!

PTI Anniversary: Inspired by Maile

Happy 5th Anniversary PaperTrey Ink! I'm playing along with the challenge to create a project inspired by one of the design team member's projects from last year.

My stamping style has evolved over the 20 years I have been practicing this craft. At one point I was a typically clean and simple stamper, but now I consider my style more classic and elegant. It's fun to re-visit the past though, and that's what I decided to do with today's challenge.

I selected Maile's card, here, as my inspiration piece. I'm essentially done with my Valentines for this year, but it can't hurt to add to one's stash!

I'm so glad PaperTrey is part of the crafting industry. The products are incomparable and I find myself reaching for my PTI stamps, paper, ribbon, etc. far more than my other crafting supplies. Nichole and the design team are the best sources of inspiration and have helped me take my crafting to a whole new level. Thank you! Here's to many, many more anniversaries PTI!!

January 2012 PTI Blog Hop: Revisiting Last Year's Favorites

Hi Everyone!

I was excited to see the theme for this month's PTI blog hop--pick your favorite project from last year and make a new project inspired by it! In my case, I picked two projects. Please click on the photos for a closer look if you like.

Here is my favorite card from last year:

And here is my new take card on the card:

I went with a Valentine theme choosing shades of pink and swapping out the straight glitter border on the first card for the heart glitter border on this new one. I also embellished the butterfly with a tiny heart from the Love Lives Here die collection and added Glossy Accents to it to make it shine. Since my sister adores butterflies and pink, this card is for her.

My favorite non-card project last year was this printer's tray devoted to Paris:

And here is my miniature burlap canvas devoted to Paris:

Common elements between the tray and canvas are the Signature Series dress form die, some collage stickers and button and the color scheme of cream, brown and light blue. Since I couldn't find the right sentiment in my stamp collection, I opted to write out "l'amour" (love) on a strip of blue paper and tuck it into the memo pin.

Thanks so much for stopping by! I look forward to seeing your creations!
